Inquiry Regarding Transit Through Athens with Bulgarian-Issued Schengen Visa

Dear Sir/Madam, I hope this message finds you well. I am planning to book a flight from Sofia, Bulgaria, to Bucharest, Romania, with a layover at Athens International Airport (ATH). I hold a valid Schengen visa issued by Bulgaria. I would like to confirm whether I can transit through Athens without any issues, considering my visa was issued by Bulgaria. The layover duration is approximately 2 hours, and I will remain within the international transit area without exiting the airport. Could you please confirm if this is permissible, or if there are additional requirements I should be aware of? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

А почему у тебя не возникает вопрос, достаточно ли тебе болгарской визы для въезда в Румынию? Чем по-твоему Греция отличается от Румынии?

Thank you for your comment, but it seems you misunderstood my question.

I’m not asking about entering Romania. I’m traveling from Bulgaria to Romania with a layover in Greece (Athens) and was asking whether I can transit through Greece, which is part of the Schengen Area.

I hold a valid multiple-entry Bulgarian-issued Schengen visa (Type C), which allows entry to any Schengen country, including Greece. Bulgaria and Romania recently joined the Schengen zone for air and sea travel, so entry between them is also permitted under this visa.

I’ve previously entered Romania using this same visa — by bus and train — without any issues. Right now, I’m simply checking if a layover in Athens International Airport (without leaving the transit zone) is permitted.

So comparing Greece and Romania in this context doesn’t make much sense. I wish you all the best in learning more about Schengen visa rules!

С 01.01.25 Болгария и Румыния стали полноценными членами Шенгенского соглашения, включая въезд по сухопутной границе. Таким образом, для обладателя шенгенской визы Греция ничем не отличается от Румынии или Болгарии. Поэтому никак не могу взять в толк, почему въезд в Румынию вопросов не вызывает, а вот транзит через Грецию почему-то беспокоит.
Ну и вишенка: при перелетах между странами Шенгена отсутствует пограничный контроль!
